After graduating from the AUA in 1986, he studied at the Chemistry Department of the University of Athens. In 1988 he traveled to Germany with a scholarship from the Deutsche Akademische Austausch Dienst (DAAD) as a graduate researcher at the Institute of Biochemistry Max-Planck in Munich. In 1993 he gained his doctorate in Plant Genetics from the University of Munich. The same year he was elected Lecturer at AUA. In 2010 he was elected Professor in the same department, having gone through all the necessary steps. He is Dean of the School Food, Biotechnology and Development of AUA. He has research and teaching experience of more than 25 years in the field of biotechnology, particularly in the field of cell biology and biosensors. He has 86 original research publications in international journals.
He has received the award for "Georgia Christodoulopoulou" of Greek Virologic Company Award of Greek Society of Free Radicals and Oxidative Stress and awards for his services to the Science of Defence.

He invented the bioelectric Recognition Assay (BERA) and technology Molecular Identification through Membrane Engine (MIME). He owns five national and two international patents. He has coordinated and participated in 23 international and national funded programs. He founded the spin- off EMBIO Diagnostics, which was distinguished in 2009 with Award CyEC and has been recognized as a leading organization in the world for the dissemination and practical application of rapid analytical methods, particularly in the areas of food safety. He is a founding member and board member of the Greek Cluster Biotechnology (HBio).
